Rory’s Story and Regulations

In March of 2012 , a 12 year old boy named Rory Staunton was evaluated for vomiting and fever. He was noted to be tachycardic ( fast heart rate), was diagnosed with dehydration, received IV fluids and was discharged home. He represented to the ER within 24 hours and died of septic shock a few days later.

This case inspired Rory’s Regulations, a New York State mandate requiring all hospitals to implement evidenced-based protocols to facilitate the early recognition and treatment of sepsis.
