Early Goal-Directed Therapy (EGDT)

Early therapies used to attain age-specific, time-sensitive goals when treating presumed sepsis

Practically speaking, fluid boluses and vasopressors should be started within the first hour and titrated to specific goals of:

• Normal heart rate for age
• Normal blood pressure for age
• Normal capillary refill, perfusion, and mental status
• Urine output > 0.5-1 cc/kg/hr
• Central venous pressure 8-12 mm Hg
• Central venous oxygen saturation >70%

The treatment must begin immediately and does not initially require a central line.
