Sepsis

• SIRS in the presence of a suspected or proven infection

Sepsis Shock

Presence of sepsis with one or more of the following:

• Cardiovascular dysfunction despite at least 40 cc/kg of isotonic IV fluid given within one hour
• Acute respiratory distress syndrome
• Two or more other organ dysfunctions (neurologic, hematologic, renal, hepatic)

When cardiovascular dysfunction is present, this is called septic shock.
