Epidemiology of Sepsis

Gram positive organisms are the most common identified cause of sepsis in the United States since 1987.

Incidence of sepsis is increasing approx. 8% per year:

• 1979: 164,072 sepsis cases
• 2000: 659,935 sepsis cases
• At present, it is estimated that there are more than 1,000,000 cases of sepsis among hospitalized patients each year in the USA
