NYP Sepsis Regulation Rationale

The Department of Health requires all facilities to develop and implement protocols that include an appropriate process for screening all patients to ensure early recognition of patients with possible sepsis and, once possible sepsis has been documented, establishing clear timeframes for administration of antibiotics and full protocol implementation.

These regulations were inspired by the case of Rory Staunton, a 12-year-old boy who died of sepsis in April of 2012. Both sets of regulations, together known as Rory's Regulations, will help New York State set a gold standard for patient care.
